PERCS stands for Perennial Ecosystem Restoration for Carbon Sequestration in Canadian Agricultural Landscapes. This is a multi-year initiative (currently in year 2 of 5) through an interdisciplinary team at the University of British Columbia with partners in industry, community, and government.
Its focus is to investigate how perennial vegetation can strengthen the sustainability of Canadian agriculture and is conducting studies on the ecological and social dimensions of hedgerows and riparian buffers, emphasizing how well-connected habitat edges boost biodiversity, store carbon, and contribute to resilient, productive agricultural landscapes.
Check out their website to learn all about the on-going research, as well as to learn about and sign-up for their research seminars. Next one is on February 24, 2026 as Dr. Jeanine Rhemtulla and Dr. Matthew Mitchell discuss the approach to data synthesis for the PERCS project.
