A member of the family Hesperiidae (“Skippers”), the vestris subspecies is one of two Dun Skipper subspecies in Canada. Skippers derive their name from their rapid, darting flight patterns. Adults of this subspecies are small with brown wings that have a purplish hue and tan fringes on the outer margins. The caterpillars are thought to feed on sedges and/or grasses. Dun Skipper lives in varied habitats which include wet meadows, moist grassy openings, fens and bogs, and has been observed in disturbed habitats such as roadside edges, constructed drainages, utility corridors and other habitats wet enough to support sedge communities.
